Glossary Term: Sanford
Sanford is a world leader
in the manufacturing and marketing of writing instruments and professional art
supplies. Founded as an ink and mucilage (or glue) company in New York in 1857,
Sanford moved to Chicago in 1866. A victim of the Great Chicago Fire only five
years later, Sanford showed its resiliency and rebuilt from the ground up.
In 1947, Sanford moved to the Chicago suburb of Bellwood to make room for an expressway. Today, following the acquisitions of Faber (1994), Berol and its Prismacolor line (1995) and rotring and its Grumbacher line (1998), Sanford has expanded exponentially into a full-service provider of writing instruments and art supplies.
