Glossary Term: Pastels

Pastels
are sticks of color used for drawing. Pastels were invented in the 15th century
and were most popular in 18th century Europe. The texture of pastels can be
chalky or oily depending on what the pigment is mixed with. Pastels are popular
because they offer bright, portable colors with no drying time.
Impressionists
such as Mary Cassatt (in "Au Theatre," right) and Edgar Degas used pastels.
